The Expo of Awesome first launched in May of 2019, with a vision to create a showcase event that would connect our inspired young learners with community professionals and mentors from the larger STEAM learning community. We set out to create an inspiring event that would showcase students’ learning around a design thinking approach to global issues identified by the Global Sustainability Goals. We invited educators to bring their students to share and reflect upon their creative-problem solving ideas with their peers, as well as an opportunity to engage in some fun hands-on STEAM learning opportunities.

Hosted on the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia, the Expo of Awesome 2019, was extremely sucessful. We received lots of positive feedback regarding the event, and most of the nearly 1000 students that attended the event, left feeling inspired and excited about future STEAM learning opportunities.

After waiting out the challenges surrounding a global pandemic, the Expo of Awesome returned in May of 2023. Even though the format was slightly different, the goal remained the same, to inspire learners around their future potential in STEAM related fields. The event saw over 350 learners, between the ages of 9-12, engage in a variety of hands-on STEAM related learning opportunities and activities.

This year’s event is shaping up to be even bigger and better as we continue to work to develop strong relationships with the local professionals and regional organizations that share a similar vision of making STEAM learning accessible to everyone. Only throught the collaborative efforts and support of the members of STEAM Ecosystem BC, are we able to support this unique learning opportunity in the Central Okanagan.
